The Best Time to Prune Trees in Utah

Pruning at the right time can make the difference between a thriving tree and one that struggles to recover. In Utah's climate, the dormant season — late fall through early spring — is generally the best time for most pruning work.
During dormancy, trees are less susceptible to disease and pest invasion through open wounds. The lack of leaves also gives arborists a clearer view of the tree's structure, making it easier to identify problematic branches.
However, there are exceptions. Spring-flowering trees like crabapples and ornamental pears should be pruned right after they bloom. Dead or hazardous branches can and should be removed any time of year.
